The right-back joined Norwich City in January 2010, after impressing on loan the previous year from Peterborough United.
Dubbed "The Norfolk Cafu" by Canaries fans, Russell played in every minute of season 2010/11 as his side earned promotion to the English Premier League.
Eligible for Scotland through his father, Brighton-born Russell's consistency attracted the attention of then national coach Craig Levein.
He earned his first cap as a substitute in the 3-1 Carling Nations Cup win over Wales on 25 May 2011.
