Lambert tasted almost instant success in Germany when he became the first British player to win the European Cup with a non-UK team, and the first British player to win the Champions League since its inception in his side's 3-1 victory over Juventus in the 1997 UEFA Champions League Final.

In November 1997 he was signed by Wim Jansen for Celtic for a fee in the region of £2,000,000.

As a full Scotland international, Lambert won 40 caps, scoring one goal and in the latter part of his international career, captaining the side 15 times and was commended for his performances at the 1998 FIFA World Cup.

Lambert and Scotland qualified for a play-off place in the UEFA 2000 European Championship qualification campaign. However Lambert played in neither game due to injury sustained in a n Old Firm game the week before. On 15 November 2009 he was inducted into the Scottish Football Hall of Fame.
