Player Bio
John Campbell was born in Glasgow in 1872, and died on 2 December 1947.
A prolific forward whose goalscoring won him plentiful medals on both sides of the borde, Campbell started his senior career at Celtic in 1890 and after early success including two League Championships in 1892 and 1894 and a Scottish Cup in 1893, he moved to Aston Villa in the summer of 1894. The team won the Football League in 1896, then won the ’double’ of League and Cup the following year - the last team to do so for over 60 years. Soon after he returned to Celtic and won another League title (1898) and two Scottish Cups in 1899 and 1900. To give a further demonstration of his usefulness, he moved to Third Lanark in 1903 and his new club won the Scottish League flag in his first season. He retired in 1906.
