James Cowan was born in Bonhill (Dunbartonshire) on 17 October, 1868. He died on 12 December, 1918.
Born in a hotbed of football, Cowan had an ideal schooling in the game with Renton and Vale of Leven before joining Aston Villa in 1887. He spent 15 fabulous years with the Birmingham club before retiring in 1902, winning no less than five Football League championships in 1894, 1896, 1897, 1899 and 1900, as well as the FA Cup in 1895 and 1897. Unusually for a centre half, we was very fast, as evidenced by his triumph in the prestigious Powderhall Sprint Handicap in Edinburgh in 1896. He went on to become Queens Park Rangers first manager, from 1906 to 1913. |
