The Hon. (later Lord) Arthur Fitzgerald Kinnaird born in Kensington, London, on 16 February 1847. He died on 30 January 1923. A key figure in the early development of football he helped to organise the unofficial England v Scotland matches in 1870 and 1871 with his friend Quintin Hogg (both of them on the Scottish side). He learned his football at Eton, continued at Cambridge University and then with the Wanderers club and Old Etonians. After election to the Football Association in 1868 he became one of the games most influential administrators serving for well over 50 years, including the period 1890-1923 as President. He played in no fewer than nine FA Cup finals, winning five of them with Wanderers (1873, 1877 and 1878) and Old Etonians (1879 and 1882). Away from football he was a well known philanthropist from an early age and became a prominent member of the House of Lords. He was President of the YMCA and was Lord High Commissioner of the General Assembly of the Church of Scotland. |
