Player Bio
John Cameron was born in Ayr on 13 April, 1872. He died on 20 April, 1935.
A creative inside forward, Cameron won just one cap but was much better known for his role in later life as secretary and team manager of Tottenham Hotspur. Brought up in Ayr, his first club was Ayr Parkhouse but he moved to Queen’s Park. In 1895 he moved south to Everton, initially as an amateur, and brought his intelligence to bear as secretary of the fledgling Players’ Union. He went to Tottenham Hotspur, then in the Southern League, in 1898 as player/secretary, staying with the club beyond his final league appearances in 1904, and was manager until 1907 when he had a dispute with the club directors. As a player he won the Southern League championship in 1900 and the FA Cup in 1901. In 1914, he was appointed as coach of Dresden in Germany, but was interned when war broke out. On his eventual return, he managed Ayr United in his home town and was a sports journalist.
