Francis Joseph ODonnell was born in Buckhaven (Fife) on 31 August, 1911. He died on 4 September, 1952.
A product of the top Fife nursery team, Wellesley Juniors, Frank ODonnell signed for Celtic in September 1930 and had a productive five years at Parkhead. He had a roaming brief in the forward line and scored 51 goals in just 78 league appearances. Preston North End paid £5,000 for his services in the summer of 1935, and although his goal ratio was not quite as impressive, he still managed 36 in 92 games, form which earned him a call to the Scotland eleven. In November 1937 Blackpool paid £8,000 and two players for his services, but he only had a year at Bloomfield Road before heading to Aston Villa, where his career was interrupted by the war. In wartime he guested for various clubs including Blackpool, Hearts, Wolves, Tottenham, Brighton, Fulham, Brentford and York City. In January 1946 he joined Nottingham Forest, and played in the first post-war season with them. He became manager at Buxton until his early death in 1952. |
