| James Allan Holton was born in Lesmahagow (Lanarkshire) on 11 April, 1951.
A powerful and dominant centre half, Holton was the darling of the Scotland supporters not only for his uncompromising style but also for scoring one of the goals against Czechoslovakia that took the country to the 1974 World Cup. Despite being on the Celtic staff as a boy, he played all his professional career in England, heading to West Bromwich Albion in 1968. He spent three uneventful years there and moved to Shrewsbury Town in the summer of 1971, but then a move to Manchester United in January 1973 put him in the public eye. It was not a good time to be at Old Trafford, with relegation looming, but he did make sufficient impact to break into the Scotland squad. He helped United to return to Division One but two leg breaks curtailed his appearances. He moved to Sunderland in 1976, to Coventry City six months later in spring 1977 then to Sheffield Wednesday in 1981 for a final season of playing. |
