Wales 0 v Scotland 1 Belle Vue Stadium Rhyl Kick Off 19.40 Thursday 29.10.09 Match Report. Scotland Under 16s kicked off against Wales in the second match in this years Sky Sports Victory Shield competition in front 1250 spectators. The young Scots had a brighter start to this game than they did in the first match against Northern Ireland and came close with efforts on goal from Matthew Kennedy ( Kilmarnock), Jack Grimmer of (Aberdeen) and Islam Feruz (Celtic). It came as no surprise when Scotland took the lead against Wales through a great individual effort from Islam Feruz(Celtic). He pounced on a mistake by Welsh defender George Higgins on the edge of the Welsh penalty and coolly chipped the ball over the advancing Luke Chambers to give Scotland a deserved lead in 10 minutes. Scotland's midfield of Grimmer ,Slater, MacLeod and Heron were dominating the game but no more goals came their way. Half Time Wales 0 v Scotland 1 Second Half Wales began to get a grip of the game in the second half but any time that they found themselves in front of goal they found James Wightman ( Celtic) in the Scottish Goal in top form. Jack Grimmer was put through by Islam Feruz mid way through the second half but unfortunately his effort hit the side netting. Both teams were trying to gain the upper hand but any time the Welsh threatened the Scottish goal they found the young Scots in no mood to give anything away. The game ended in a 1-0 victory to the young Scots and now sets up the final game in the tournament against England at Tynecastle at the end of November. Coach Ross Mathie said.....We are all delighted to come away from Wales with the 3 points as they really played well against England in their first match and we knew it was important not to give them the initiative from the start. Everyone was so delighted that Islam Feruz (Celtic) opened his goal tally for Scotland with a wonderful solo goal which he finished with such composure, but this was a great team effort and it is great to have won two matches away from home. We now look forward to the match against England at Tynecastle at the end of November |
