| Walter Smiths first home match attracted a superb crowd to Hampden, and they witnessed Scotlands first win in a year in this World Cup qualifier. While it was clear that Scotland have much room for improvement, it was a sound and workmanlike performance to earn the three points. At times, the visitors did look lively and could have scored, but the Scots took their chances and both goals came from the substitutes. Soon after the break, Lee McCullochs persistence down the left led to a cross ball that the visiting goalkeeper flapped into the patch of onrushing Christian Dailly, who pounced to fire the ball over the line from close range. Late on, the addition of James McFadden added some spark to the attack and he clinched the victory with two minutes remaining, latching onto Kenny Millers pass to shoot home. |
