Bernard Battles

Bernard Joseph Battles was born in Musselburgh East Lothian on 12 October 1905. He died in November 1979.
Barney Battles had an unusual life and an unusual career. He was born eight months after his father, also a Scotland international, died from pneumonia and inherited his footballing skills. Although brought up in Edinburgh, he became part of the football exodus to the USA and his first professional club was Boston Wonder Workers of the American Soccer League, whom he joined in 1924.
