Scottish FA makes payments to clubs

Wednesday, 06 January 2010

The Scottish FA has paid out over £1million in a bid to help member clubs through the difficult economic climate.

Clubs across Scotland benefited from the discretionary payments at the end of 2009 – the third year in a row that the Scottish FA has been able to give clubs a financial boost.

Scottish FA chief executive, Gordon Smith, said: “We’re delighted to be in a position to help member clubs again this year, thanks to our prudent business practices.

“This is the third year in a row that we’ve been able to put money back into the game through discretionary payments to clubs.

“Everyone is aware that many clubs are under financial strain as we go through the global recession so it’s especially pleasing that we’re in a position to help clubs during this very tough economic climate. We hope that these discretionary payments will help to make a difference as we look towards a more prosperous economic period.

“We’ve had a great response from clubs, who have been grateful for the money received. However, I would like to clear up any confusion around the reported situation regarding East Fife FC. I reiterate that the payments are discretionary, and East Fife did not qualify due to legal costs incurred by the Scottish FA over a separate matter. The issue was explained in writing to the club.”

Clubs received payments on a sliding scale, depending on league division, while payments were also made to the Affiliated National Associations. An additional £700,000 was also paid to the Football Partnership.
