Scottish Cup | The stand-out games this season

Wednesday, 24 May 2017

It’s been an enthralling William Hill Scottish Cup campaign this season with quick goals, upsets, last minute equalisers from goalkeepers and much more.

Here, we take a look at five of the best games of the competition this season which have captivated crowds and provided moments that will live long in the memory.

Forres Mechanics 2-2 Lossiemouth, Scottish Cup First Round, Saturday, 24 September

A dramatic late equaliser from the most unlikely of sources saw Forres Mechanics earn themselves a replay against fellow Highland League side, Lossiemouth.

A Lee Fraser strike saw Forres take the league after only nine minutes, but they found themselves behind in the second half after a penalty/red card double saw them lose captain Graeme Grant, before a second for Lossiemouth put the Mighty Cans behind.

Forres’ exploits in the 2016-17 Scottish Cup were coming to an end until, deep into injury time, Forres goalkeeper Stuart Knight – in the opposition box –  rose like a salmon to nod in the equaliser.

Berwick Rangers 2-3 Hawick Royal Albert, Scottish Cup Second Round, Saturday, 22 October

Hawick Royal Albert reached the Third Round of the Scottish Cup for the first time in some style, as the Lowland League side beat League Two’s Berwick Rangers away from home.

A first half Josh Morris hat-trick saw the side from Hawick lead 3-1 at the break. Despite a second half fightback from Berwick, the Albert stayed defensively strong to hold out for a memorable 3-2 victory.

Buckie Thistle 3-5 Dunfermline Athletic, Scottish Cup Third Round, Saturday, 26 November

Highland League side Buckie Thistle were very close to causing one of the shocks of the tournament at Victoria Park when they came from behind twice in the first half to be level 2-2 at the break.

Buckie notched a third in the second-half to make things interesting with a raucous home support behind them.

In the dying moments they were close to making the score 4-4 but a last minute Dunfermline goal crushed their hopes and secured the Championship's side's progression to the next round.

Albion Rovers 2 -1 Queen of the South, Scottish Cup Third Round, Tuesday, 29 November

Albion Rovers set up a dream tie at home to Celtic following a dramatic 2-1 win over Championship side Queen of the South.

The Coatbridge side took the lead early on and were pegged back to 1-1 after 76 minutes.

As the game edged to a close, Darren Young’s men were given a setback when Ryan Wallace was given his marching orders.

Former Inverness forward Calum Ferguson then scored the dream winner late on to secure a match up against his flat mate Ryan Christie who was named on the bench in the game between Celtic and Rovers in the Fifth Round.

Hibernian 2-3 Aberdeen, Scottish Cup Semi-Final, Saturday, 22 April

Aberdeen reached the Final for the first time since 2000 with victory over holders Hibernian in a pulsating match at Hampden Park last month.

Adam Rooney pounced on a defensive mix-up to put the Dons ahead just 12 seconds after kick-off, and Ryan Christie's free-kick doubled their lead.

Substitute Grant Holt came off the bench in the first half to nod Hibs back into the game and the striker then set up Dylan McGeouch to level the scores.

A speculative Jonny Hayes shot provided the winner after deflecting off Darren McGregor to beat Ofir Marciano for Aberdeen's winner.
