The Scottish FA’s network of 2020 Development Centres are up and running for the new term.
The centres provide players in primary five, six and seven the opportunity to begin their journey through the association’s performance pathway.
Ritchie Wilson, community development manager for the Scottish FA, said: “2013 is set to be a year where the 2020 Development Centres will really take off in communities across Scotland.
“Since we launched the network in October, the programme has been well received by players, parents and the football community and we intend to further expand from 24 to 36 centres in August this year."
The Scottish FA’s strategic plan, Scotland United: A 2020 Vision, includes a performance strategy to nurture the country’s best players and establish a clear pathway into the Scotland National Teams.
Ritchie added: “The centres’ ethos is to help develop players who play with sportsmanship, invention, passion and creativity.
“The centres are there to compliment the good work being done by clubs across the country.
“This is a long-term commitment by us to provide the ideal environment for young players to begin their journey on the pathway.”
The programme includes weekly two-hour training sessions over a 36 week period with a responsibility on the attendees to commit to regular practice.
The first cycle of the programme ends in June this year and restarts in August with a new batch of players.
