Gorre impressed by under-17s at training camp

Monday, 06 August 2012

Scotland Under-17 national coach Dean Gorre is impressed with the technical ability shown by his squad during last week’s training camp at the sportscotland National Centre Inverclyde in Largs.

Gorre and his team welcomed Jack Harper, of Real Madrid, into the squad for the first time after Scottish FA performance director Mark Wotte visited him in Spain earlier this year.

“Jack is a very interesting player,” said Gorre.

“It was good to see his energy and enthusiasm. He definitely has extra qualities above and beyond a player for his age.

“I’m looking forward to working with him in the future.”

Gorre said he was encouraged to see the physical and technical development of the squad since they last met.

“Players such as Robbie Muirhead, who scored four goals against AC Milan recently, are showing excellent signs of development with regards to power and speed of thought,” he said.

And the former Ajax youth coach said he was pleased the players could match his coaching demands.

He said: “We were using highly technical training methods and the players met all of my expectations.

"We are teaching a 4-3-3 flexible formation with a passing from the back and a high defensive line."

Gorre said the players responded well to the coaching and was delighted to see the squad developing a strong collective spirit.

“I am enjoying very much working with these players,” he added.

“I would say there are definite signs that the future of Scotland is good as the players I am working with have good intelligence and technical ability.”

Scotland Under-17s take on Belgium in a friendly double-header on August 28 and 30 at the Forthbank Stadium in Stirling.

And Gorre said he can’t wait to assess how the players have responded to last week’s training camp.
