Narrow defeat in Cyprus Women's Cup opener

Cyprus Women's Cup - Group A
New Zealand 1-0 Scotland
Wednesday 6 March, kick-off 2.30 pm
GSP Stadium, Nicosia

Hassett 26

A first-half Betsy Hassett goal sealed a narrow win for New Zealand in the opening match of the Cyprus Women's Cup.

Hassett pounced on the rebound after a great save by Shannon Lynn to grab the only goal of the game in the 26th minute.

Scotland captain and goalkeeper Gemma Fay missed out on adding to her tally of 152 caps through illness.

Lisa Evans and Kim Little were both substituted in the second half as a precaution, with one eye on the remaining group matches against England and Italy.

National coach Anna Signeul said: "It was a tough result to take. We had the better of the chances, but didn't take them.

"It was quite an even game over all. New Zealand had two one-on-ones with our goalkeeper and Shannon made two great saves, but we didn't get back quickly enough to take care of the rebound that led to the first goal.

"We fought to get back into the game, but couldn't make the breakthrough. We have very high expectations as a group, so we're not satisfied after this match.

"We do have a very young squad and we're struggling a bit with injuries just now. However, it's important for our younger players to get more experience at this level, and we have some more challenging matches coming up.

"We'll train tomorrow and the focus switches to the match against England on Friday. We know that will be yet another tough game, against a side preparing for the Euro 2013 finals.

"We now need to focus on recovering from today, and getting everyone fit and ready for Friday."
