Scotland U19s suffer qualification blow

Wednesday, 21 September 2011

UEFA European U19 Championship Qualifing Round
Slovenia 2-1 Scotland
Bistrica, Slovenia

Janza 52 (p), Pucko 67; Irvine 23

Slovenia under-19s dented Scotland's hopes of qualifying for the elite round of the UEFA European Under-19 Championship courtesy of a 2-1 win over Billy Stark's side.

Jackson Irvine had put Scotland in front after 23 minutes but an Erik Janza penalty shortly after half time and a Matej Pucko goal on 67 minutes sealed the win for the hosts.

Slovenia started the match brightly and created a number of good goal-scoring opportunities but it was Scotland managed to break the deadlock.

A Callum McGregor corner was flicked on by Jason Holt and poked home by Jackson Irvine to put Stark's men 1-0 up.

Scotland could have had a second afterFraser Fyvie powered his way through the Slovenian midfield and set up McGregor but his shot was easily saved by the Slovenian goalkeeper.

Slovenia were given the opportunity to get back in the game on 52 minutes when Leighton McIntosh was judged to have fouled in the box.

Erik Janza stepped up and sent Scotland goalkeeper Jordan Archer the wrong to level things up.

And it wasn't long before the hosts were in front with Matej Pucko firing home from close range after 67 minutes.

Stark's men piled on the pressure towards the end of the match in search of an equaliser and the final chance of the match fell to Holt but his effort from 20 yards went high over the Slovenian goal.

Scotland's next match in their qualification group is on Friday against Wales (kick-off 12pm). Live goal updates are available on the Scottish FA Twitter feed.
