West School League season finale

Tuesday, 24 April 2012

Toryglen was the location for the West Region School League season finale.

Abercorn High School (AHS), two-time national champions,  already had the winner’s trophy in the bag before the final set of fixtures.

However, the battle for second place and a place at the National Championship was up for grabs with three schools fighting for the honour of representing the West region in May at Ravenscraig Regional Sports Centre.

Holybrook, Cardinal Winning and Mary Russell High Schools started the day separated by only four points.

The competition came down to the final match with Holybrook needing to defeat AHS.

After a fantastic display, Holybrook could only manage a 0-0 draw against the champs, their only dropped points of the competition.

The day ended with the three teams separated by four points after a 28 game season, however Cardinal Winning managed to win the race for second place.

The West Region will be represented by winners AHS and runners-up Cardinal Winning at the National Finals in May.

Stuart Aitchison, league c-oordinator, said: “The 2011-2012 league has been a huge success with all teams improving over the course of the championships with a number of fantastic games making it an exciting ending to the whole league.”

David McArdle, Scottish FA disability development officer, added: “I have been very impressed with all the teams’ standard of play and level of commitment shown by the teachers and players.

“The programme has been great to get more players playing the game on a regular basis which gives them confidence and be able to improve their technical ability which may allow the players the opportunity to compete for Scotland at international level.”
