Glasgow City prepare for crucial Champions League tie
Tuesday, 25 September 2012
Scotland’s top women’s football side, Glasgow City, began their final preparations today ahead of their biggest match of the season so far – their last 32 UEFA Women’s Champions League match against Danish side, Fortuna Hjørring.
The match represents City’s second time at this stage of the competition after becoming the first Scottish women’s side ever to reach the knock-out stages last year, when they faced and defeated Icelandic Champions Valur Reykjavik over the two legs.
Speaking ahead of the big match, City Head Coach, Eddie Wolecki Black commented, "We are here again amongst Europe’s elite and are proud to be so."
"Fortuna are a very experienced European side and are regulars at this stage of the competition. Indeed their greatest every achievement as a club was when they reached the final in 2003, under the competition’s previous name of the UEFA Cup. They have started their season very strongly and are fresh. We are nearing the end of ours, and have had a very successful campaign so far having won every domestic match this season in all competitions. We are therefore full of confidence and are very much looking forward to the challenge ahead."
Glasgow City Captain Rachel Corsie said, "The team are really looking forward to the game. This level of match in Europe’s most elite club competition is the reason we all play the game and the chance to perform in front of our home support is something special."
"Our aim at the start of the season was to ensure we brought Champions League women’s football back to Glasgow after our success last season and we are aiming to do just as well again, if not better. We have a fantastic group of players and we can now say that we are experienced at this level, so we know what to expect and cannot wait for the match to start. It would be great to get a good crowd behind us on the night."
As an extra bonus for young fans, Glasgow City have also launched a loyalty scheme for all kids aged under 16 allowing them to get even more out of their already fantastic deal of free entry to all City First team home domestic fixtures and friendlies.
Kids can pick up their loyalty card as of tomorrow night at City's Champions League match at the Club Shop and earn loyalty stamps for each game they bring along a full paying adult.
For every five loyalty stamps you can collect a free item of Glasgow City merchandise.
The loyalty card is valid for all domestic matches for one season, but as an extra bonus, they are allowing those who collect their card this season to start earning straight away. This means the card will be valid for Sunday’s Quarter Final Henson Scottish Cup tie against Celtic at Petershill Park, 2pm, and for the rest of City's home domestic matches this year.
