Glasgow City bow out of Champions League

Thursday, 04 October 2012

Scottish Champions Glasgow City went out of the Champions League tonight after a stalemate 0-0 in Denmark against Fortuna Hjorring meant they lost 2-1 on aggregate overall.

It was a much improved City performance against their hosts as they outplayed Fortuna for the majority of the match, but sadly the damage had been done a week earlier when a poor start in Glasgow, put the Scots two goals behind after 30 minutes.

Tonight was looking to be a completely different story as City striker Jane Ross hit the post after only 13 minutes, but despite creating a number of goal scoring chances, City could not find their way past the Fortuna defence and in particular keeper Maria Christensen, who similar to in Glasgow, was in outstanding form.

Commenting on the match, City Head Coach Eddie Wolecki Black said, "The best team has gone out of this competition. Over the two legs it has been our performance in the first half of the first leg that has cost us."

"You look at the performance of their goalkeeper again, who was the busiest player in their team and it says it all. I think the girls have done their country poroud tonight. They are all still very young and they will learn from this and be better. The challenge for them now is to go on and win the League and be back here again next season."
