Glasgow City to lift sixth consecutive league SWPL title this weekend

 

With 3 games still remaining, City cannot now be caught and will go into their remaining league matches, knowing that they have achieved a feat like no other in the history of the Scottish women’s game.

 

City first won the League back in 2005 and despite missing out one season later when they were runners-up, since the start of season 2007, they have never looked back and have dominated the Scottish women’s domestic game ever since.

 

Laura Montgomery, club manager and co-founder, retired at the end of 2010 and has experienced City achievements both on the field and off it. She said, "It is unbelievable to be honest to think that we have won 7 titles in 8 seasons, with the last 6 in a row. I think people believe it is easy, but it has if anything been harder to retain the title year after year."

"It requires a huge amount of focus from the playing and backroom staff to drive themselves to improvement year after year. We know that everyone is desperate to beat us and become the one side who can knock us off our perch, but winning the League and playing in the Champions League is what drives these players on."

 

Laura continued "Winning does not come easy. There is a phenomenal amount of preparation done by Eddie Wolecki Black and Donald Jennow and the rest of the coaching staff for every single training session and match and this is more than matched by the work behind the scenes to ensure our players have everything they need to perform at their best."

 

"Six seasons ago, we had one full international at our club and if I look at our players now and the signings we have made over these past years, we have only ever signed one regular full international. However, we currently have 9 players in the Scotland set up in the first team and I think that says something about the demands placed on our players and the benefits it brings to them and to ourselves as a club. Our coaching standards are incredibly high and in turn the demands on our players are incredibly high, but without these, we would not be sitting with our sixth title secured and looking to make it seven next year."

 

Laura is pleased with how City's season has gone overall but expressed regret over one element. She said, "Our only disappointment so far this year has been in the Champions League where we felt we could and should have had a better result in the last 32 for our efforts. However, domestically we can achieve the treble as we have won the Premier League Cup, the League title and are in the Henson Scottish Cup semi-final. We have only ever managed the treble once before and I was lucky enough to still be playing then, but I believe this group of players are more than capable of achieving this feat once more and in turn make 2012 another remarkable year in our club’s history."

 

Glasgow City will be presented with the Premier League trophy at their home match against Aberdeen at Petershill Park, 30 Adamswell Street, Springburn, G21 4DD. The match will kick-off this Sunday afternoon at 2pm.
