Biography

David Gillespie Weir was born on 10 May 1970 in Falkirk, Scotland. After winning a soccer scholarship at the University of Evansville in the United States, he returned to Scotland and began his professional career with Falkirk. After 133 appearances in four years with the Bairns, Weir signed for Hearts where he lifted the Scottish Cup in 1998. He joined Everton in February 1999 and made 235 appearances over seven years and became club captain. Rangers signed Weir in 2007 where he remained until his retirement in 2012.
Craig Brown handed Weir his first international cap in 1997 in a friendly against Wales and he went on to make 60 appearances for the national side, scoring a single goal. He played at one major tournament, making one start and two substitute appearances at the France 1998 World Cup. Weir became Scotland’s oldest footballer when he played against Lithuania in September 2010 aged 40 years and 116 days, breaking Jim Leighton’s record.
