Gordon George Banks Marshall was born in Edinburgh on 19 April, 1964.
As might be guessed from his middle names, Marshall was destined to be a goalkeeper and was the son of another keeper of the same name. A schoolboy signing for Rangers, he broke his leg in 1981 and after a year’s recovery went on loan to East Stirlingshire in the early months of 1982/83.
