Scottish FA President Alan McRae paid tribute to the full back, who captained the national team on 14 occasions.
Alan McRae: “I am deeply saddened to hear the news of Eric’s passing. Eric was one of the finest full backs to grace Scottish football having played with Rangers and also Stirling Albion.
“He played during a golden era for Scottish football. Alongside his many club honours, he represented Scotland 40 times including three appearances at the World Cup in 1958. His final Scotland appearance came in the famous 2-1 victory over England at Wembley in 1963 during which Eric broke his leg, a horrific injury which curtailed his career.
“Eric will be remembered fondly and, on behalf of the Scottish FA, I offer our condolences to his family and those close to him.”
