The two country’s football histories have entwined on countless occasions with Scottish internationals such as Paul Lambert, Alan McInally and Murdo MacLeod making an impact on the German game. The Scottish leagues have also enjoyed the presence of German internationals such as Jorg Albertz and Andreas Hinkel. Here’s our ultimate 1-11 of players to have played in both Scotland and Germany: German/Scots XI Klos Jack O’Neil Hinkel Lehmann Lambert MacLeod Albertz Thom McInally McGhee GK: Stefan Klos Rangers | 1999-2007 | 208 appearances Having spent eight years at Borussia Dortmund – where he won the UEFA Champions League – Rangers pulled off somewhat of a coup when they signed goalkeeper Stefan Klos in 1999. Klos won four league titles in his time at Ibrox and five domestic trophies. DF: Mathias Jack Hibernian | 1999-2003 | 109 appearances Raith Rovers | 2003-04 | 6 appearances Journeyman defender from Leipzig who played for 13 different sides in his career, including a four year spell at Hibernian. Played in the 2001 Scottish Cup final defeat to Celtic and scored five goals in 109 appearances. Also spent a short-time at Raith Rovers in 2003/04. DF: Brian O’Neil VfL Wolfsburg | 1998-2000 | 50 appearances Started his career at Celtic before moving to Aberdeen and then VfL Wolfsburg. During his time in Germany O’Neil helped Wolfsburg qualify for their first-ever UEFA Cup and retains popular status with the club’s fans. DF: Andreas Hinkel Celtic | 2008-2011 | 79 appearances Was still a regular fixture in the Germany squad when he signed for Celtic from Sevilla in 2006. The attacking right-back won the Scottish Premier League title in his first season in Scotland and also lifted the League Cup in 2008-09. MF: Paul Lambert Borussia Dortmund | 1996-97 | 44 appearances Became the first Scot to win the European Cup with a non-UK side when he lifted the famous trophy with Dortmund in 1997. Lambert was tremendous in both the semi-final win over Manchester United and in the final itself in Munich, where he assisted a goal and marshaled the threat of Juventus midfielder Zinedine Zidane. MF: Jorg Albertz Rangers | 1996-2001 | 137 appearances Clyde FC | 2007-08 | 7 appearances “The Hammer” struck fear into defensive walls all around Scotland with his powerful free-kicks. Spent 5 successful years at Ibrox where he scored 82 goals, won 7 domestic honours and helped Walter Smith’s side clinch a famous ninth consecutive title in 1997. Also played for Clyde when they were managed by former Rangers teammate John Brown. MF: Dirk Lehmann Hibernian | 1999-2001 | 59 appearances Motherwell | 2002-2003 | 43 appearances Famous for the sticking plasters he used to wear over his earrings, Dirk Lehmann spent two successful spells in Scotland at Hibernian and then Motherwell. Scored twice on his Hibs debut in 1999 and played alongside a young James McFadden during his time at Fir Park. MF: Murdo MacLeod Borussia Dortmund | 1987-1990 | 103 appearances Spent nine years at Celtic before making the move to Germany in 1987. Was an instant success at Dortmund where he won both the German Cup and Super Cup. One of his first games in the black and yellow was a UEFA Cup clash against his old team Celtic! FW: Andreas Thom Celtic | 1995-1998 |70 appearances Scored 16 goals for the East German National Team and played 10 games for Germany following unification. Signed for Celtic in 1995 where he won the 1997 League Cup and 1998 Scottish League championship title. FW: Alan McInally Bayern Munich | 1989-1993 | 40 appearances Following spells with Ayr United, Celtic and Aston Villa, McInally left to join Bayern Munich in 1989. The striker scored 10 goals in 40 games and earned the nickname ‘Big Mac’ by the Bayern fans. Scored in a European Cup semi-final. FW: Mark McGhee Hamburg | 1984-85 | 30 appearances The Scotland Assistant Coach spent a year at German giants SV Hamburg after leaving Aberdeen in 1985. He helped the team to fifth in the Bundesliga and also made the last 16 of the UEFA Cup.
