
Ally made his Scotland debut in a 0-0 friendly draw against Holland on the 29th April 1986, though he had to wait until September 1987 to score his first goals. Scotland faced Hungary in a friendly at Hampden and he netted twice in a 2-0 win.
McCoist earned 61 caps and scored 19 goals for his country, most memorable is probably his stunning strike to defeat Switzerland at Euro 96. His 19 goals make him the fifth highest goal scorer of all time for the men’s national team.
Ally returned to the international fold in 2004, as assistant manager to Walter Smith – a period that included a famous victory against France at Hampden.
