
Daniel Fergus McGrain was born on 1 May 1950 in Glasgow. He made his debut for Celtic in 1970 and became a stalwart of the successful sides of the 1970s becoming captain in 1977. He made 681 appearances for the Parkhead club where he remained until 1987, winning seven Scottish League Championships, five Scottish Cups and two League Cups. McGrain made his full international debut in May 1973 in a tie against Wales at the British Home Championships. He represented Scotland at two World Cups, in 1974 in West Germany and 1982 in Argentina, playing five times at the tournament and never losing a game. In total, he played 62 times for Scotland and captained the side on 10 occasions.
