
In January 2014, he was appointed club captain at Blackburn, captaining the side until a move to Newcastle United in the summer of 2016.
After helping the Tyneside club gain promotion back to the Premier League, he signed for Norwich City in August 2017 and was made club captain at the beginning of the 2018/19 season.
Following a short loan spell with Birmingham City, he signed for Scottish Premiership side Hibernian in August 2025.
At international level, Hanley was included in the men’s national team squad for the first time for the inaugural Carling Nations Cup in February 2011 just three months after making his debut for the Scotland Under-21s.
He made his senior international debut in May of that year during a 3-1 victory over Wales.
His first international goal also came against Wales, scoring the opener in a 2014 World Cup qualifier at Hampden in March 2013.
In June 2021, Hanley was named in Steve Clarke’s 26-man squad for the delayed EURO 2020, playing in all three of Scotland’s group stage matches at the tournament.
After winning his 50th cap during a friendly against Finland in June 2024, the defender was included in Scotland’s EURO 2024 squad and featured in all Scotland’s matches once again.
Hanley played a vital role as Scotland qualified for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, starting four of his country’s qualifying matches including the crucial 4-2 victory over Denmark at Hampden.
