John Angus Paul Collins was born in Galashiels on 31 January, 1968. An outstanding midfield talent, Collins broke the mould by turning to football, rather than the more popular rugby of his home town. His playing career started at Hibernian, whom he signed for in 1984 from local youth side Hutcheson Vale. He spent six years at Easter Road before moving to Celtic in 1990 for a reputed £1 million, and won the Scottish Cup in 1995. In 1996 he moved to Monaco on a Bosman transfer before a spell in England with Everton and Fulham. John would win 58 caps for Scotland. His most famous goal for Scotland was a first half equaliser against Brazil in the opening game of the 1998 World Cup Finals in France.
