He made his debut for the Dons in a Europa League tie against English Premier League side Burnley, scoring his first goal for the club during the second leg of the tie with a stunning overhead kick.
Ferguson was nominated for the PFA Young Player of the Year Award in 2019 and was the club’s top scorer during the 2020/21 season before securing a transfer to Italian Serie A side Bologna in 2022.
The 2023/24 campaign was a memorable one for the midfielder as he was made captain of the club and was voted Serie A midfielder of the year during a season in which he became the top scoring Scotsman in Serie A history.
He made more history in 2025 as he captained the side to Coppa Italia victory for the first time in 51 years, becoming only the second Scottish player to lift the trophy.
At international level, Ferguson was capped for the Scotland Under-19s, Under-20s and Under-21s before making his full Scotland debut against Denmark in September 2021.
A knee injury meant he missed out on a place at EURO 2024, but the midfielder made his international comeback in March 2025 against Greece in UEFA Nations League play-off, starting the match and playing the full 90 minutes after almost a year since his last cap.
Ferguson scored his first international goal against the same opponents in a crucial World Cup qualifying match at Hampden Park in October 2025 and made five appearances in total during the campaign as Scotland qualified for their first World Cup since 1998.
