He made his league debut for the club in August 2020 and scored his first professional goal during a UEFA Europa League match against Royal Antwerp in February 2021.
Patterson deputised for injured captain James Tavernier during the latter stages of the 2020/21 season as Rangers were crowned Scottish Premiership champions.
He signed a five-and-a-half-year deal with English Premier League side Everton in January 2022, making his debut for the club during a FA Cup fifth round tie against Boreham Wood in March of that year before injury brought an end to his season.
The right-back made his English Premier League debut against Chelsea in August 2022 under manager Frank Lampard.
At international level, Patterson made his senior international debut during a friendly against Luxembourg in June 2021.
He was included in Steve Clarke’s squad for the delayed EURO 2020 tournament, coming off the bench during Scotland’s final group game against Croatia at Hampden Park.
He soon became a regular in the Scotland squad, scoring his first international goal during a World Cup qualifier against Moldova in November 2021.
After missing both EURO 2024 and the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifying campaign through injury, Patterson was included in Steve Clarke’s squad for friendlies in March 2026, winning his 25th cap against Cote d’Ivoire.
