Kilwinning Sports Club has been recognised for its excellent work after being awarded Legacy status at the recent Scottish FA South West Region Quality Mark Awards.
Long serving club chairman, Jim McCubbin was on hand to collect the award and dedicated the victory to the entire community. He said “We are very proud to receive the award and it would not have been possible without the great volunteers that help run events. Everyone from the local council to the Scottish FA has helped us receive this award.”
Kilwinning’s rise through the Scottish FA’s Quality Mark Scheme could be seen as a miracle. Jim McCubbin and his friend Jim Hodge (club director) helped open Kilwinning Sports Club in 2000. The facility was a disused pavilion with a pitch and no floodlights. Sixteen footballers were part of the original club and now fifteen years later there are 27 teams, which accommodate under 6’s all the way up to over 50’s.
The new state of the art facilities at Kilwinning is just one of a number of reasons why the sports club have been recognised by the Scottish FA. When Mr McCubbin founded the club all those years ago, he could not have dreamed how different it would look today.
With support from sportscotland and North Ayrshire Council, the two Jim’s were able to sustain and develop a facility and sports club that can now be seen as an inspiration for any small Scottish sports community. Facilities now include all weather pitches and a gym with expert assistance on hand for visitors.
Kilwinning have continued to work with the Scottish FA and have some of the best community workers to aid the process. Jim McCubbin was quick to praise the impact they’ve has had on the sports club saying, “The support from the Scottish FA has been outstanding. Giving us the guidelines on how to run has enabled us to achieve the Quality Mark.”
