Team News

Fresh off the back of their victory against Austria, Gary Doctor made two changes to the side that started Scotland’s three-match campaign to qualify for the Under-19 Euros.

Sienna McGoldrick replaced Ashley Robertson, while Isla Taylor came into the front three in place of Neve McDonald.

As It Happened

Sophie Townsley was quick off the mark with an early break into North Macedonia’s half, but it was her sweeping cross to Isla Taylor that put real pressure on their opponents early into the game.

A well-worked ball by Jess Husband was played through to Townsley, who again put an inch-perfect cross into the box, but Laura Berry was just short of being able to get the shot.

Scotland kept the pressure up, and North Macedonia’s Vedrana Komnenova’s goal kick was quickly swept up by Abi Tobin, who ran up the wing and flew past the Macedonian defence.

Tobin played the ball through to Sienna McGoldrick, whose own short pass to Sophie Black outside the box saw the midfielder strike the ball from 20 yards out, screaming past Komnenova to see Scotland take the lead.

And Tobin soon saw her own name added to the scoresheet when Jess Husband’s pinpoint pass from the corner flag found her just as she ran into the box, striking the ball and sending it perfectly past everyone and into the top corner to go two-up.

With North Macedonia feeling the continued siege from Scotland, it was Isla Taylor's swinging cross to an unmarked McGoldrick that gave Scotland their third of the game and hinted at more to come.

Scotland captain Ella West would soon prove that Scotland were indeed aiming to keep up the goal count, driving her shot low past Komnenova to add a fourth goal to Scotland’s score and build on an already impressive display.

A stray arm by Ana Borizoska saw North Macedonia’s day darken further as the referee didn’t hesitate to award the penalty to Scotland, which Laura Berry took to add to the score and continue her excellent scoring record from the spot.

Facing up against Komnenova, Berry confidently struck the ball low and to the right, beating the keeper and taking the score to five-nil to underline an exceptionally successful first half for the Scots.

The second half saw Scotland get straight back to business, looking to add to the already impressive scoreline.

Sophie Black tried to strike the ball past the defence to look for a sixth goal, but a block by the defence saw the ball fall to fresh substitute Cara Gray, whose header was unlucky not to see the back of the net.

Scotland wouldn’t have to wait long for their sixth, though, as a floated cross from Isla Taylor into an unmarked Sienna McGoldrick saw the midfielder nod the ball home for her second of the day.

McGoldrick’s sixth was followed later in the half by a swift ball in from Taylor, which met fresh substitute Olivia Chomczuk, who confidently flicked the ball on with the inside of her boot to net the seventh Scotland goal of the day.

Looking to follow suit to Chomczuk’s flair, Neve McDonald struck a poised shot at goal, although it hit the bar, but Isla Taylor was there to follow up, scoring from the rebound for goal number eight.

Scotland would continue the pressure to score again, with Jessica Ramsay running on to strike with power, but it was blocked for a corner.

Jess Husband soon followed with her own shot from well outside the box, but North Macedonia’s Komnenova saved it, hoping to keep them from conceding a ninth.

But this Scotland team weren’t finished.

A throw-in from Darra Dawson was taken on by Chomczuk, who worked the ball deep into the North Macedonia box, playing the cut-back to Gray, who dinked the ball onto an oncoming Jess Husband, who slotted the ball past Komnenova to get a deserved goal and bring a busy day of goals to an end.

Nine goals, a clean sheet, and three points see Scotland take the top spot in the group, leapfrogging Norway, who they will face on Thursday.

Norway’s loss to Austria today will give Gary Doctor’s side some real confidence to end the week with a victory and keep themselves placed top of the group.
