Biography
David Craig Mackay was born in Edinburgh on 14 November 1934. He played as left half/sweeper. A Hearts supporter, Mackay made his debut for the Jambos in November 1953. He would win the League in 1958, the Scottish Cup in 1956 and the League Cup in both 1955 & 59. He was named Scottish Player of the Year in 1958. A move to Tottenham Hotspur followed in 1959; he was a key player in Tottenham’s double winning year and he also enjoyed success in Europe winning the European Cup Winners Cup in 1963. With Spurs, MacKay won the League in 1961 and the FA Cup in 1961, 1962 and 1967. Following his time at Spurs, he signed for Brian Clough’s Derby County, helping the Rams to gain promotion to the First Division – winning the Football Writers’ Association Player of the Year Award.
Mackay made his Scotland debut against Spain in 1957. He would win 22 caps for his country, scoring four goals.
During his management career he managed Derby County to the English League title.
Dave Mackay passed away in March 2015 at the age of 80.
