Biography
Lawrie made his debut for Scotland on the 24th October 1948, making an appearance against Wales in the British Home Championship. Though he didn’t score in his first two matches, he made amends by scoring against England in the following year’s championship.
His goal turned out to be the winner in a 3-2 victory at Wembley and helped him achieve the distinction of scoring more goals against England than any other striker in the 20th Century. In all, Lawrie Reilly played for Scotland 38 times, scoring 22 goals along the way – a 61% goals-to-games ratio superior even to Kenny Dalglish and Denis Law and second only to Hughie Gallacher.
He remains Hibernian’s most-capped player ever and is fourth-highest Scotland goalscorer of all time. Reilly was inducted into the Hampden Hall of Fame in 2005.
