Shaun Maloney
Biography
The Malaysian-born midfielder joined Celtic as a trainee in 1999. He made his first team debut in an Old Firm derby against Rangers in April 2001, and went on to win the SPFA Player of the Year and Young Player of the Year awards in 2005/06 – the first player to win both awards in one season.
After 138 appearances, Shaun joined former Celtic manager Martin O'Neil at English Premier League side Aston Villa in January 2007, and returned for a second spell at Celtic a year later.
He joined Wigan in 2011, and two years later he scored, and was named man of the match, in an FA Cup semi-final win over Millwall at Wembley. He provided the assist as Wigan defeated Manchester City 1-0 to lift the trophy in their first ever FA Cup Final appearance.
Shaun was capped at Scotland under-21 level before making his senior debut in a World Cup qualifier against Belarus in October 2005. He scored his first goal in a 2-0 Euro 2008 qualifying win against the Faroe Islands.
His next goal came six years later on his 31st cap. He netted a sublime free-kick to seal a 2-1 World Cup qualifying win over Macedonia in Skopje in September 2013.
