Biography
Scotland goalkeeper and captain Gemma Fay won her first cap aged 16 in a 1-1 European Championship qualifying draw against Czech Republic. She has been a Scotland stalwart ever since, and was named captain by national coach Anna Signeul at the start of the 2009 Cyprus Women's Cup. She picked up her 100th cap in the final match of the tournament, a 2-1 victory over Russia. She reached the 150 cap milestone in the UEFA Women's Euro 2013 play-off second leg against Spain in Madrid in October 2012. Gemma was in goal throughout the run to the play-offs for UEFA Women's Euro 2009. She played in every minute of the Women's World Cup 2011 qualifying campaign as Scotland won six out of eight games and just missed out on the play-offs, finishing a point behind Group 3 winners Denmark. She helped Scotland to reach a second straight Euro play-off, saving a penalty in each leg of the two matches against Spain. Scotland agonisingly missed out on the finals after conceding a goal deep into added time of the second leg to lose 4-3 on aggregate. Gemma retired in 2017 after winning over 200 caps for Scotland and playing in Euro 2017.
