This year’s Barclays NextGen Cycle came to completion last weekend with Cup and Plate finals hosted at Kirkintilloch Community Sports Complex. The showpiece finale for the Under-17s took place on Saturday and the Under-15s edition was on the Sunday.
Saturday’s finals kicked off with Kilmarnock facing Hamilton Academical in the 12pm kick off for the Under-17s Barclays NextGen Plate trophy. A well-contested game finished in a 3-2 win for Hamilton with goals from Katy Barker and Sophie Wilson before Jorgie Robertson wrapped up the victory. Skye McDonald had scored a brace for Kilmarnock before Robertson’s winner.
Saturday’s Under-17s cup final was contested by Heart of Midlothian and Celtic. Hearts started the quickest, taking the lead through Lucy-Jane Hope in the 13th minute, who finished off a quick counter-attack. Hearts doubled their lead through a cool finish from Zoe Linn as the first half was drawing to a close. Despite Celtic pushing to get back into the game, it was the Edinburgh side that claimed the trophy.
Sunday’s finals started with the Under-15s plate where Glasgow City came up against Hamilton Academical, competing in their 2nd final of the weekend. Accies started quickly, with Chloe Munro firing them in front in the 3rd minute. City responded well and got their equaliser through Esme Kelly. Goals then from captain Marta Frew, Charlotte Verney-Webster, Sophie Tweedie & Georgie Riddell meant Hamilton claimed their second trophy of the weekend.
The last final of the weekend was the Under-15s cup. The final was a repeat of the Under-17s cup the previous day, with Celtic facing Heart of Midlothian. The game started fast with goals from Harlow Ross and Olivia Gallacher firing Celtic into an early lead within five minutes. Hearts then levelled through a quickfire Emily Wyper double ensuring the first period ended tied at 2-2. It was Celtic who edged ahead in the second period, scoring three goals before the second break. Olivia Gallacher fired Celtic ahead, Ross got her second before Gallacher completed her hattrick which ensured Celtic secured the silverware.
Youth National Team Coaches Gary Doctor, Michael Tuohy and Nichola Greig as well as Performance Officer, Lisa McKenzie were all in attendance to present the medals to both teams supported by several members of the Talent ID Team. Special guest Mason Clark, Women’s Under-23 & Motherwell midfielder, was on hand to present the trophy to each of the winning teams.
