Scotland v England UEFA Women’s Nations League Tuesday, 5 December, kick off 7:45pm Hampden Park, Glasgow

Scotland will wrap up their UEFA Women’s Nations League journey on Tuesday night at Hampden Park against the Auld Enemy in the final game of 2023.

Pedro Martinez Losa’s side opened their campaign against England with a narrow 2-1 loss in Sunderland. A draw at home to Belgium was to follow and then back-to-back defeats by the Netherlands was enough to put a dent in the hopes of remaining in ‘League A’. Another draw against the Belgians on Friday night means that Scotland now drop into ‘League B’.

Such is the fiercely competitive nature of ‘League A’, FIFA World Cup finalists England came from behind to win 3-2 against the Netherlands last week, who currently top the group on goal difference. The Lionesses also fell to defeat away to Belgium in October. England travel without captain Millie Bright and Beth Mead returns from a lengthy spell on the sidelines.

Pre-match thoughts

Speaking after Friday night’s draw with Belgium, head coach Pedro Martinez Losa said: “It’s been a tough night. What we want is to qualify for the Euros – now we need to pick up another route.

“We have a very young group. We have been living in good moments and bad moments on and off the pitch.

“It’s a moment of learning. It’s a moment to be ready for the next challenge that’s coming up – we will keep going. We have an important game on Tuesday. We have to recharge the batteries.”

Midfielder, Hayley Lauder ended a three-year absence from the national side when she replaced Fiona Brown in the second half in Leuven on Friday, she said: "Result aside, it is amazing to be back. I started to think it wouldn't happen.

"I was surprised, but I don't want to come back and just go away with the team, I want to help.

"For big spells of the game against Belgium we were in it. We created a lot of opportunities but that final touch and final pass let us down. Ultimately, it's disappointing.

"This is what we need to show every game. The game on Tuesday night means a lot to us."

Previous meeting

The two sides last met in September – a closely contested match which saw England hold on to a 2-1 lead.

The hosts enjoyed the bulk of possession in the early stages, but a dogged, disciplined Scotland side were tough to beat.

With 21 minutes on the clock Scotland came within an inch of taking the lead, a stunning save from Mary Earps denied Caroline Weir.

Three minutes later England thought they'd edged in front, but Rachel Daly's headed 'goal' was flagged offside.

There were strong appeals for a penalty on 36 minutes when Millie Bright appeared to shove Thomas - who required treatment for the head knock sustained in the collision.

It proved a decisive moment as England surged forward, with Katie Zelem's pinpoint cross headed home by Bronze.

Clinical England made it two with another header, this time Lauren Hemp diverting in from Daly's delivery.

Scotland quickly rallied as England lost the ball in a dangerous area and Emslie took full advantage, with a teasing ball across the box that Hanson seized on. Earps looked on in horror as the ball spun beyond her and into the net.
