Scotland Under-17s will kick off their UEFA EURO Under-17s Championship campaign on Wednesday afternoon with a match against holders France in Debrecen.

The opener at the Nagyerdei Stadium will kick off at 3:30 (UK time) and - like all of Scotland's matches - it will be broadcast live on the BBC Scotland website.

Brian McLaughlin's side have qualified for the finals of the tournament for two years in a row, after reaching last year's finals in Israel.

The young Scots have been handed a tough draw in Group C. After facing France, they take on Portugal on Saturday and their group matches conclude with a match against Germany on Tuesday, 23 May.

Scotland qualified from their Elite Round group in March - finishing second in a group that included Wales, Iceland and Montenegro.

Pre-match thoughts

Head coach Brian McLaughlin reflected on back to back qualifications for the prestigious tournament. His side were the youngest in the competition last year in Israel and a number of the players are competing in the finals for the second year in succession.

He said: "I think it’s really important for the players themselves to have achieved back to back qualifications. They’re maximising their opportunities to play international football in this age group.

“It’s a real achievement because it’s really tough. Last year when we qualified for the finals in Israel we were the only team in the UK to do it and we’ve seen big names this year not make it as well.

“So it’s really challenging for the players and it’s a vital for their development that they get experiences in going into groups that they have to get out of.

"We had six players who will have now gone twice and hopefully they take the last 12 months and two finals with them in their development.

“They’re playing against players that they don’t know so when they go on the pitch they’ve got to find out what their strengths are and what their weaknesses are.

“History shows that in this tournament, the best players in Europe will play in this tournament. Cristiano Ronaldo, Kylian Mbappe, Erling Haaland have all played in this tournament.

“It will be a great experience for them and I think our young players are really good at taking the experience back and using it to drive them forward in their training and in their games back at their clubs."
