Scotland will play their final group match of the Women's Under-19s Euros against the Netherlands on Monday.

The hosts of this summer’s Women's Under-19s Euros were beaten 4-0 by Norway on Friday evening. Norway blew Scotland away with a fast start and scored four before the half-time whistle. However, a more assured second half performance will have encouraged Pauline Hamill’s side who grew into the match.

The Netherlands fell to defeat on matchday two against France, losing 3-1 in Paisley. The Dutch came into the tournament in excellent form and beat Norway by a convincing score line of 5-0 in their opening group game.

Group A remains wide open with all four teams still able to qualify for the semi-finals. However, Scotland would have to overturn a significant goal difference to progress. After failing to reach the semi-finals last year, the Netherlands will be desperate to get through the group stage this time by beating Scotland.

The two sides last faced each other in March when the Netherlands were 4-1 victors.

Key players

Amy Muir’s energy in the middle of the park will be crucial for Scotland. The Scotland captain works tirelessly and often wins the ball high up the pitch to start attacks. Muir also has real quality from set pieces, which was one of Scotland’s main attacking outlets against Norway.

Muir will face up against Dutch midfielder Jonna Van De Velde in the engine room on Monday. Van De Velde has scored in both of Holland’s previous matches and it will be important that Scotland prevent her shooting opportunities.

Scotland captain Amy Muir spoke ahead of Monday’s match against the Netherlands, emphasising that her team must take positives from the defeat to Norway she said:

“We were disappointed with first half against Norway but need to look at positives from the second. We came out and went back to basics in the second half and looked much better.

“In the second half we got organised and compact. We need to start the game like that on Monday against the Netherlands because they’re a really good side.

“We’ve had fantastic crowds so far and they really get behind us and we’re hoping for the same when we play the Netherlands.”
