Mouhamed Niang's accurate finish got Dumbarton off to a dream start and James Hilton doubled the Sons' advantage two minutes later.
Michael Ruth's dinked finish made it 3-0 and although Luke Donnelly and Stefan Scougall pulled two goals back, Dumbarton held on to settle the all-League One clash and become the first team into the hat for Round Four.
Another League One side, Annan Athletic, were not as fortunate as they came unstuck in Fraserburgh, who produced one of the performances of the day at Bellslea Park. Connor Wood gave the Highland League side the lead and Kieran Simpson doubled their advantage just before half-time. Fraserburgh would hold on to that lead to book their place in the Fourth Round for the first time in seven years.
Lowland League side Broxburn Athletic also knocked out League opposition as they defeated Stranraer 2-1 after extra-time. Jonathan Page's opener was cancelled out by Elliot Dunlop but Nick Locke's extra-time winner sent the West Lothian side through.
Brora Rangers have giant-killing history in the Scottish Cup, having famously defeated Hearts a couple of seasons back, but they could not repeat the trick this year. They were comfortably defeated by Livingston who won 2-0 with goals from Reece McAlear and Tete Yengi.
Musselburgh Athletic were also making their own history by competing in the Third Round for the first time and they marked the occasion in style, with goals from Nathan Evans, Callum Donaldson and Craig Stevenson giving them a 3-1 win over Bo'ness United as their dream run continues.
Elgin City's match with Kelty Hearts was League One leaders against League Two leaders and it was the League Two side who triumphed, as Elgin ran out 3-2 winners in an entertaining contest. Ryan Sargent scored a brace, with Dylan Gavin also on target.
Stenhousemuir were the day's high-scorers as they won 5-0 away to Irvine Meadow XI, with Euan O'Reilly grabbing a hat-trick.
Remarkably, Linlithgow Rose and Raith Rovers had met twice already at Prestonfield in the Scottish Cup in the past decade, with the Fifers winning 2-0 on both occasions, and they doubled that goal tally today, running out 4-0 victors.
Ayr United came out on top in an all-Championship affair against Greenock Morton, with second half goals from Mikey Devlin and Jamie Murphy giving them the victory.
The other match involving two Championship sides was at Hampden, as Queen's Park hosted Partick Thistle and this one went all the way to penalties after goals Louis Longridge Zak Rudden, Robbie Crawford and a Will Tizzard own goal. Josh Scott would be the hero for the Spiders as he converted the 16th penalty kick to send Queen's Park through.
Forfar also came through a penalty shoot-out, winning 4-2 on spot-kicks after a 3-3 draw with Stirling Albion.
