Scotland Under-21s face Northern Ireland on Saturday in the second fixture of their June international double header.

Earlier this week, the new-look Under-21 squad were edged out 2-1 in Dumbarton.

Scot Gemmill and his staff have a second match to look forward to though as they build towards the new UEFA Under-21 Championship qualification campaign kicking off in September.

With the likes of Billy Gilmour and Nathan Patterson fast-tracked into Steve Clarke’s squad for the European Championships, Gemmill had a lot of fresh faces to run the rule over and will do so again this weekend.

Captain Glenn Middleton was the only one to return from the Under-21’s last run-out back in November 2020, with Lewis Mayo, Logan Chalmers and Stephen Kelly the only others to have been capped at that level.

As Gemmill admitted afterwards, it will take time for the squad to gel, having only had three training sessions together ahead of this closed door contest.

He said: "If you put the game in context it was very difficult for the players as a few of the boys finished their season four weeks ago, others three weeks ago.

"So it's difficult to get back up to speed. I don't think we played at the right intensity, which you could see. It was a new group with new players and that was all visible from the performance, unfortunately.

"But it's great to be back working with the group and we're looking forward to trying to improve the squad and the players - but the performance does show there is a lot of work to be done.

"Was this a chance to get over those teething troubles before September? Absolutely. We have a few players who we haven't worked with before who are trying to find their feet.

"We're trying to see who we can trust moving forward. We will analyse today's game and see who is ready to play and who isn't for Saturday."

The match kicks-off at 2pm on Saturday, 5 June. You can follow live goal updates on the Scotland National Team Twitter.
