
William McClure Johnston was born on 19 December, 1946 in Maryhill, Glasgow. He made his debut for Rangers in August 1964, winning the League Cup in his first season. Perhaps his finest moment for Rangers came in 1972, as he scored twice in a 3-2 victory against Dynamo Moscow in the European Cup Winners’ Cup in Barcelona. During his time with Rangers across two spells, Johnston won the Scottish Cup and the League Cup twice. Johnston enjoyed a spell with West Bromwich Albion following his departure from Rangers, and was voted as one of the clubs’ 16 greatest players in 2004.
Johnston made his Scotland debut aged just 18 in a World Cup qualifier against Poland. In total he won 21 caps for his country.
