Scotland U21s 0-2 England U21s
Tuesday, 16 October 2018, kick-off 5.30pm
Tynecastle Park, Edinburgh

England: Reiss Nelson (73), Kieran Dowell (90)

Scotland’s UEFA European Under-21 Championship Qualifying campaign finished with a 2-0 loss over a strong England side at Tynecastle Park.

At the break, Scotland were level having defended well but two well struck shots from the edge of the box in the second half sealed the 2-0 win for Aidy Boothroyd’s England.

Following the 3-1 defeat to Ukraine, Scot Gemmill named Ayr United duo Ross Doohan and Liam Smith in the starting line-up with Ross McCrorie captaining the side.

Already qualified for Italy 2019 Aidy Boothroyd’s side travelled to Scotland with confidence having disposed of Andorra comfortably, 7-0.

England were in control of the early proceedings but were unable to really test Scotland’s defence with Doohan pulling off two routine saves in the first 15 minutes.

Jake Clarke-Salter went close for Scotland 22 minutes in but the captain saw his header fly over the bar.

Half an hour on the clock Ross McCrorie had a golden opportunity for Scotland inside the box but his volley flew over the crossbar.

In direct response England found themselves free inside the box but Harvey Barnes failed to hit the target and blasted well over under no pressure.

England were impressive in possession but their final product was lacking and Tammy Abraham found himself on the end of a dangerous cross after 36 minutes but he volleyed wide of the target.

As the break approached Tammy Abraham had a stinging shot which took a wicked deflection but Doohan was equal to it, saving with his feet.

Liverpool’s Dominic Solanke also went close when he saw his shot hit the roof of the net.

At the break, Scotland went into the dressing room level, 0-0.

The second half started similarly to the first and Doohan was called into action with a sharp stop down to his left hand side from Abraham.

With 58 minutes on the clock, Ross McCrorie was booked for a challenge at the edge of the box and Reiss Nelson made him pay with a stunning free-kick which curled beyond the helpless Doohan.

With the game drawing to a close, Scotland looked to hurt England on the counter and after 84 minutes Ryan Porteous hit the crossbar from a header.

In the dying moments Kieran Dowell secured England’s win with a crisp finish from the edge of the box.
