Team News

Leanne Ross named the same Glasgow City team that beat Heart of Midlothian 2-0 on the final day of the SWPL season.

In the opposition dugout, Jo Potter made two alterations from her side’s 1-0 defeat to Hibernian last time out. Laura Rafferty and Rio Hardy dropped out as Kathy Hill and Brogan Hay came in.

As It Happened

Rangers enjoyed possession in the game’s infancy before Amy Muir and Nicola Docherty contested a fierce 50-50 challenge. Docherty perhaps came out the worse of the two, although she was fine to carry on after some treatment.

Glasgow City soon grew into the game. Brenna Lovera smartly won a corner on the near side after some admirable footwork out wide. Jenna Fifa confidently claimed Hayley Lauder’s delivery, though.

Natalia Wrobel then looked to threaten Fife from the edge of the box, but her effort lacked the required power or accuracy.

Despite some Glasgow pressure, Rangers came closest to opening the scoring early on. Mia McAauley hit the post as she aimed to go across Lee Gibson before the woodwork denied the team in blue moments later, with Hill’s looping header hitting the bar.

Glasgow soon went close, rattling the bar themselves after Nicole Kozlova dug out a dipping strike after some neat interplay on the left-hand side.

The opener eventually came on 24 minutes. McAulay, a continual threat in the opening quarter, was played in behind Glasgow’s defence. Setting her sight on goal, the number 14 arrowed the ball into the bottom left corner to give Rangers the lead.

Captain Docherty was forced to come off shortly after her side went ahead, still feeling the effects of an earlier challenge with Muir. Laura Rafferty came on in place of the defender.

Although Glasgow began their quest for a leveller immediately after going behind, Rangers doubled their lead just under 10 minutes from half-time. A fine ball into the box from Katie Wilkinson found Kirsty Howat. She brought the ball under control with ease and spun Samantha Van Diemen before firing into the bottom corner from close range. It was a goal any centre-forward would have been proud of.

Potter’s side could then easily have had a third seconds later. McAulay found herself clean through on goal, yet Gibson came up with a crucial save to just about keep her team in the final.

The half-time whistle then sounded after four additional minutes, with Rangers well in control.

Glasgow made a solitary change at the break, with Emily Whelan coming on in place of Sofia Maatta. It didn’t make much of a difference, however, as Howat got her second of the game on 50 minutes, tapping in from close range after Chelsea Cornet’s cutback. 3-0 Rangers.

The holders continued in their quest to further extend their advantage after going almost out of sight. Glasgow struggled to get themselves up the pitch and created little in the way of opportunities for a consolation, that was until the ball fell kindly for Kozlova in the box. Unfortunately for City, she could only divert her effort wide.

Things then went from bad to worse for Ross’ side, as Van Diemen was ordered off for the denial of a goalscoring opportunity on 78 minutes.

Rangers were able to enjoy the closing stages in the partial Hampden sunshine, as they made it back-to-back Scottish Gas Women’s Scottish Cup triumphs.
