A spirited Scotland side bowed out of this summer’s UEFA Women’s Under-19 Championship after a defeat to the Netherlands.

A crowd of 1,126 watched on at a sunny St. Mirren Park, where Scotland had kicked off their Women’s Under-19 Championship campaign last week.

Scotland started the match at a high tempo, in similar fashion to the opening game against France. McGovern and Napier sat high pressurising the opposition central defenders, supported well by the central midfield pairing of Muir and McIntosh.

The game’s first chance was created by this pressure, Napier hustled the Dutch defence to win the ball on the edge of the box and drove towards goal, but her left footed effort was well held by Dutch ‘keeper Van Domselaar.

The Netherlands showed real quality in possession in the opening stages and began to mount up the pressure. They opened the scoring through fullback Lynn Wilms before the ten-minute mark. A ball cleared by Scotland fell to Leuchter on the right flank who swung a tempting cross to the near post which was turned in by Wilms.

The game continued to be controlled by the Netherlands. Many of their attacks came down the right side of Wilms and Leuchter and the former could’ve scored her second soon after the opener. The full back struck a fierce volley goal bound but it was well blocked by Jenna Clark.

Midfielder Marisa Olislagers would get the game’s second goal. The ball fell to her at the edge of the box after Scotland had cleared a cross from the left and the Netherlands captain struck a volley from 20 yards into the bottom right corner. A deft strike from range to finish into the corner through a crowded box.

The second half continued in the same vien as the Netherlands dic the ball and tried to break down the Scottish defence. Wide player Van de Westeringh caused problems early on and went close with a drive from distance.

Pauline Hamill’s side began to grow into the match and move the ball up the park. Much like in their previous match against Norway, they looked more comfortable on the ball in the second period. Substitute Lauren Davidson had a notable early chance after being played through on goal, her low strike stung the palms of Van Domselaar who got down well at her front post.

The threat from the Netherlands remained and they were inches away from adding a third. Naomi Hillsort drove the ball low into the area and the ball broke to forward Smits who couldn’t put the ball away, Scotland ‘keeper Allison smothered the ball before the Dutch number nine could have a second bite at the cherry.

A third goal was to follow, centre back Lisa Doorn was first to react to a second ball at a corner and lifted a left footed shot high into the net out of the reach of Sophie Allison.

Scotland pressed for a consolation goal, but the Netherlands would add a fourth on 90 minutes. Lisa Doorn again was the scorer, this time lobbing Allison from an angle. A fantastic finish from the defender for the second time in less than ten minutes.

It finished 4-0 to the Netherlands but Scotland will feel slightly aggrieved by the score line after their performance in the second half. The tournament hosts will be pleased overall with the account they have given of themselves throughout the group stage.

The Netherlands progress to the semi-finals of the UEFA Women’s Under-19 Championship 2019, they will face Germany at Firhill this Thursday.
