New research into fan engagement with the Scotland Women’s National Team (SWNT) reveals a growing positive attitude towards women’s football in Scotland.
Both Hampden Park, as a venue, and the Scotland Women’s National Team (SWNT) as a symbol are identified as being important for Scotland.
The report from Edinburgh University’s Academy of Sport (AOS) is the seventh data driven report from AOS supporting the football industry in Scotland.
Some of the positive trends revealed by the ‘Hampden Nights’ study include:
- 86% of fans see the SWNT as extremely important for the country.
- 88% of SWNT supporters say shared experiences with family and friends are just as important as winning.
- People tend to get to games early to make it more of an occasion.
- 75% say the experience is inclusive and accessible.
- 79% say the SWNT plays an important role in the community.
- Hampden Park as a place is seen as important for the SWNT.
Scottish FA Head of Girls’ and Women’s Football Shirley Martin: “It’s fantastic to have a study like this which provides great insight into what fans enjoy and want from their supporter experience.
“We’ve been working extremely hard on providing a memorable match day experience for fans of SWNT which has resulted in back-to-back record crowds for competitive games and hopefully a lifelong affiliation with the women’s national team.
“The findings from the ‘Hampden Nights’ study also allow us to look ahead to the start of the UEFA Women’s Nations League in September with a lot of positivity as we prepare to host Belgium, the Netherlands and England at Hampden Park.”
Professor Grant Jarvie, who led the research team, commented: “The Scottish FA and the SWPFL have been really supportive. It is great to be able to help support women’s football in Scotland and contribute to help closing the data gap between women and men’s football – the capability building that we can bring to the sports industry is exciting.
“A lot of money is spent on gathering on-field data at the expense of off-field data gathering. The sports industry in Scotland can get better at understanding what fans actually want and it is great to be able to help.”
