Scotland's Victory Shield campaign kicks off on Tuesday, as Stephen Clarke's young side host Republic of Ireland at Broadwood at 11:30am.

Previous Tournaments

Historically an Under-15s tournament, the Victory Shield has taken place every year since World War Two, switching to Under-16s after the 2001 competition to fall in line with UEFA competitions.

Traditionally the line-up comprised Scotland, England, Wales and Northern Ireland, until England’s withdrawal in 2015. They were replaced by the Republic of Ireland.

Scotland last won the tournament outright in 2013, when a squad including recent Men’s A squad members, Robby McCrorie and Ross McCrorie secured a win against Northern Ireland and a draw with Wales before beating England 1-0 at Stark’s Park to seal the triumph – with current Falkirk midfielder Calvin Miller scoring the winner.

Scotland did share the Victory Shield win with Wales in 2019, however, with Ben Doak, Jeremiah Mullen, Dire Mebude and Matthew Anderson all involved for Stuart McLaren’s side as they defeated Republic of Ireland in the first match before a 0-0 draw with Northern Ireland and a 1-1 draw with Wales followed.

After a one-year hiatus owing to covid-19, the Victory Shield returned in 2021 in Northern Ireland and it was once again shared by Scotland and Wales. Scotland won 1-0 against the Republic of Ireland in the opener before going down to Northern Ireland by the same scoreline in the second. A 2-0 win over Wales ensured that Scotland and Wales would share the Shield for the second time in two years.

Scotland won the first two matches in 2022 but lost to Republic of Ireland in the final match. Republic of Ireland would go on to win that tournament before also winning in 2023.

Pre-tournament thoughts

Head Coach Stephen Clarke: "It’s a historic competition and I’m delighted that Scotland is finally getting the chance to host this tournament once again, after missing out during the covid-19 period.

"It’s an honour to be leading a side out, but I’m more excited for this group of players who will get their chance to be a part of it.

"It’s been a pleasure to work with these players over the past 12 months and the boys have been exposed to some fantastic fixtures, including England, Spain, Italy and Portugal. We’ve put in some top performances and we’re hoping we can replicate them over the course of the week.

"I think anyone that has seen this group over the year would agree we are a team that will always try to build from the back and play through the lines, and we will try to press with intensity and purpose.

"We’re very much part of a collective approach in the Scotland national pathway and we always look to implement the habits that will supplement the higher national age groups in future."

Defender Callan Hamill: "Our recent camp in Spain was a very enjoyable experience, playing against some fantastic teams like Switzerland, and even the intensity of the training too brings out the best in me.

"The football that we play is really good, it’s a nice style of play and it’s stood up well against some of the best teams in the world at this age group.

"Our first trip away was in December last year when he went to Lisbon and beating Italy was a highlight. It was a tough test but all the boys did well.

"It will be very good to implement what we’ve worked on all year. Everybody is looking forward to this, playing in front of all our family and friends, and hopefully we can go and do well."
