Toulon Tournament 2017
Scotland 1-0 Brazil
Saturday, 3 June 2017, kick-off 5.30pm (local)
Stade Parsemain, France
Taylor (36)
Greg Taylor’s left-foot strike earned Scotland their first win at this summer’s Toulon Tournamen as they beat Brazil 1-0 in France.
The Kilmarnock full back latched on to an Oliver Burke past before smashing the ball beyond Phelipe in the Brazilian goal as Scotland recorded a memorable victory.
The win moved Scotland up to second in Group C and keeps them in contention for a place in the semi-finals.
After going down 3-2 to Czech Republic on Wednesday, Scotland knew they needed all three points to have a realistic chance of advancing to the last four.
Scot Gemmill made three changes to the side that lost in the opening group match, with Jamie McCart, Adam Frizzell and Iain Wilson all making their first starts at thisyear's competition.
Burke again captained the side and his great run down the right almost led to the opening goal after 22 minutes.
The RB Leipzig forward latched on to Ruben Sammut’s pass and he found Craig Wighton in space inside the box but the Dundee striker sent his effort wide.
Burke then had the chance to open the scoring himself four minutes later when he burst free of the Brazil defence but his low shot was saved by Phelipe.
Scotland’s pressure finally paid off just before the interval when Taylor’s shot made the breakthrough.
Burke showed some nimble footwork on the left before teeing up Taylor who fired the ball into the top corner.
Scotland started the second half brightly and Sammut tried his luck from the edge of the box but his effort was stopped by the goalkeeper.
Brazil controlled possession for periods of the second half but were unable to trouble Jack Ruddy in the Scotland goal.
Ryan Hardie had a golden opportunity to seal the win with three minutes remaining but he couldn’t find a way past Phelipe after being put through one-on-one with the Brazilian goalkeeper.
Scotland held firm to create history and give their Toulon Tournament bid a shot in the arm ahead of Tuesday’s final group match against Indonesia.
